Justice Week In Kisowera

The department I work in at IJM holds what we call a Justice Week usually once a quarter. The justice week is where we spend most of the week at one of our justice churches preaching on justice, teaching on the Ugandan law, and holding a will-writing clinic. One of the highlights of a justice week is the Justice Act wherein the church seeks out someone in the community who is in evident need and reaches out to serve him or her. Sometimes the person's needs can be simple things such as filling jerry-cans with water, collecting fire wood, slashing the grass and bush around their home, or even washing their clothes. The pictures below are of the justice act during our most recent justice week in Kisowera (in Mukono, Uganda).

Serving with a justice pastor and one of the church members. There's nothing like seeing the leadership of the church get their hands dirty for the sake of the community!

Talking with the lady we were there to serve. She was over 100 years old and was so frail and weak.

This is me being told she can't hear me, let alone understand English! =)
Inside her home.

Dithan (IJM colleague) talking quite loud to greet the lady when we returned the following Sunday to see how she was doing. The justice church in this area slashed her grass and gave her a new gomesi (dress).

"Learn to do what is good. Seek justice. Correct the oppressor. Defend the rights of the fatherless. Plead the widow's cause."

Happy Birthday Miss Eloise!

Our Sweet Ellie Bean is ONE Year Old Today!

We can't believe how fast time is flying. We've had Eloise home for six months now and today she turned one year old! Eloise has changed so much in the last 6 months and we've enjoyed seeing her grow and progress.

When we brought Eloise home on October 16th, 2012 she was a tiny 13 pound 6 month old who couldn't sit up on her own or bear much weight on her legs. She was lethargic, unresponsive, and didn't make a peep! But little by little we saw her blossom and grow. She started exercising those vocal cords and making her needs known, she became more active, she learned to sit, then crawl, then stand on her own. She started smiling whenever we entered the room. She started crying when we left! She started laughing at her big brother. She started pulling our faces in for a kiss.

Today Eloise is a happy, healthy one year old! She is a giggly little girl who loves to smile and laugh. She thinks her big brother is THE GREATEST thing since sliced bread. She LOVES baby dolls and will pull her doll in for a hug and kiss when she sees it (SO different from Isaiah!). She knows please, thank you, more, all done, and bye bye in sign language. She also knows how to say the words Dada (no Mama yet!), all done, thank you, uh-oh, and poo poo. Her very first word was "hot", the same first word as Isaiah (no, I did not try to make that happen!).

Eloise is miss speedster in the crawling department. She can get anywhere she wants to go in her walker or by crawling. She walks along furniture and crosses from one piece to the next but no walking on her own yet. She can stand by herself though so it's not far off! She is a climber and loves to climb on the couch and into any little bucket or box she can find.

Little Ellie Bean is a cuddle bug and I absolutely LOVE IT!!!! Isaiah was not a cuddly baby (although he's more snugly now that he's a toddler - go figure!). Eloise will lay her head on your shoulder, pat your back while you hold her, pull your face in for a kiss, and hug you tightly. Some of my favorite times are snuggling with my baby girl! She is such a sweetheart.

Eloise is a pretty laid back baby. Isaiah was a good baby, but Eloise is a great baby! She is a bit more whiny than Isaiah was (a girl thing!?!) but for the most part so content. She can entertain herself for very long periods of time. She also plays well with Isaiah. They have just recently started "playing" together although much of it is still side by side play. But each day I see them interact more. Also, the fighting has already started although it's still few and far between. They will fight in the bathtub over a WASHCLOTH. Seriously?? =)

Eloise is a good sleeper though she doesn't require as much as Isaiah did at this age. She usually sleeps 11-12 hours straight through the night and takes two naps during the day. Can't complain there! She eats a wide variety of foods, still nurses several times a day, and loves her fruits and veggies!

Eloise Ann Hutcheson is our blessing and our Joy. We are so thankful the Lord blessed us with her precious little life. We look forward to the years to come as we watch her grow into the young woman God has planned for her to be!

Happy Birthday Eloise!

The birthday girl!
Eloise: "Umm...this string thing is really getting on my nerves."
"I think I'll just pull it and get it off my face."
"AHHHHHHH! That was a BAD idea!"
Right before she grabbed the cupcake and burned her hand with a little wax!
Trying to convince her that the cupcake was not going to hurt her. After she got burned she was so scared of it! =)
Adelynn being silly and Isaiah thinking she's like the coolest thing ever!
Being goofy.
"Yay! I tried the cupcake and it didn't burn me!"
Frosting kisses for mom.
Nice lipstick Adelynn.
Messy kisses from Daddy.
"Mmmmmm, this cupcake thing is actually pretty GOOD!"
She finally got into it and discovered she loved it! =)
Mr. Cool with his sunglasses.
My two cuties!!!
Can't remember why Isaiah didn't have a shirt on....lol.
The cute little backpack Eloise got from Meema and Papa .
Isaiah got something from Meema and Papa too!
A little monkey which he LOVES!
Happy birthday sweet girl. Mommy, Daddy, and Isaiah LOVE you!!

Where Are The Wilberforces of Today?

Recently during our morning office devotions, one of my colleagues encouraged us with the life of William Wilberforce and shared about this remarkable individual. Wilberforce, as you may know, was one of the central figures during eighteenth century Europe who helped pioneer the end of the horrid injustice of the African slave trade. Although he did not become a believer until later in life, he eventually became a Christian at which point his conviction to fight for the abolishment of the slave trade became his calling.

This post is not about Wilberforce himself as much as it about a wake up call for the Christian Church and about taking action in our faith, as well as my work at IJM.

Wilberforce's faith should excite and ignite us. It's a story of undying perseverance. I love seeing someone who goes against all odds, embracing a large challenge, all out of a conviction for what they believe is right. This was Wilberforce, but the most awesome thing is that in large part what he did was out of conviction for Christ.

Where are the Wilberforces of today? That is to say, where is the conviction to have action-oriented faith within the Christian church today? Where are those men and women who are willing to examine their hearts and then examine the culture in which they live, then take a stand for the narrow way?

Since living here in Uganda and working for IJM, I've come to view the story of Wilberforce quite differently, and with much more respect. We mainly focus on the end of Wilberforce's story, how eventually a bill in parliament was passed to begin the end of the slave trade. What we often overlook is the fact it took Wilberforce and others over twenty years of tireless, often times discouraging and always painstaking work before they received the progress needed to end the slave trade. That, my friend, is what's called staying faithful to the call. That is perseverance at its core.

Right now at IJM in Uganda, we have undergone a multi-year area wide project called Project Empannyi. This project involves the coordination of judges, magistrates, lawyers, the local police department, pastors, churches, the general public, and radio and television ad campaigns all in an attempt to end an injustice that plagues the area we work in. The hard work demanded by this project never stops and often times it can seem as though the breakthrough we need is all but a dream.

Nevertheless, if there's anything Wilberforce teaches us, it's that persevering through a call does not mean fretting over the challenges, but focusing on striving for the victory to be had. The work we do at IJM has taught me that in every country and culture there are horrid injustices that exist. But that, as Christians, we can make a difference if we allow our faith in Christ to make us take action. As a result of this, I find at the office everyday, my colleagues, who live and breathe to fight injustice and corruption for the sake of others - it never gets old! And despite the odds against our work, we see God show up in miraculously breathtaking ways and alter the lives of the victims we serve.

On a smaller, more individual scale, I think this practically looks like examining our sphere of influence and our sphere of existence. Then, within them, seizing opportune ways to do something which in large part, we can attribute to our faith. And this is what it's all about, all that justice and the gospel is about - making much of the Savior. Whether directly or indirectly, this is what Wilberforce ultimately did, all out of the faith he had in the same God we place our faith in.

Where are the Wilberforces of today?

Eloise - Home Six Months!

Eloise has been in our family almost 6 months now and we've seen so much change in her! When we brought her home she was a lethargic 6 month old who we couldn't get to smile or even respond to us. Today she is a happy, healthy, and energetic one year old whose giggle brightens our day! She has attached extremely well and is developmentally on target. She has come so far in just six months and fits into our family perfectly!

The name Eloise has been our name for a girl for a very long time now! As difficult as it was for us to chose a boy's name when we had Isaiah, we were always sure about our girl's name of Eloise! The name Eloise means "warrior" and her middle name, Ann, means "gracious and merciful". Our prayer for our baby girl is that she will grow to be a very strong, gracious, and merciful warrior for Christ! (Ann is also the middle name of my (Amber's) mom and my grandma (my dad's mom) so it is a very special family name to us!).

The life verse we chose for Eloise is:

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end."

Ecclesiastes 3:11

We chose this verse for Eloise because we believe God is doing something truly beautiful in Eloise's life. Her story starts out with a lot pain and heartache. It is not pretty. Yet God is changing sweet Ellie's story. He is rewriting it, and you know what? It is BEAUTIFUL! Our human minds cannot fathom what God is doing from the beginning of her story to the end, but we know that in HIS time he is writing a wonderful story for her life. God’s works are done well; there is order, harmony, and beauty in them all. We can’t yet understand all that He’s done concerning the past or the future, but at the proper time we’ll see how beautiful it all is!

More to come later, but here are a few picture from Eloise's first 6 months with us. Oh how we love our precious baby girl!!!
